Fusion Tactical Range Review Part II

This is the second installment in a multi-part review of Fusion Tactical Range in Forney. The first part of the review was published last summer, just after the first phase of development was completed.  I was at the range last week for a .308 ammo evaluation and noticed a number of improvements, so it appears as if phase II is well underway.   Following is a brief photo review of the range’s current state.

If you have not been at the range for a while, the first thing you notice – and from quite a distance – is the portable office and entrance.  Low tech, but very low cost too – just the way I like it 🙂

The American flag is a recent, and welcome, addition.

My favorite tree is not yet in full bloom, but the parking area is better defined than last year.

And, it’s no longer necessary to resort to the trees for that ‘special business.’

At the time of the prior review, we did not have rifle stations at every hundred yards.  Now, there are stations at 100, 200, and 300 from the primary berm.  Here is a shot from behind the 100-yard area.

There is a new stand that accommodates two shooters and an area to shoot prone.

The tent is nice when you need a break from the sun.

Here is another shot of the 100-yard area.

Some of those stands I find a bit uncomfortable. At 5′ 8″, I have to sit on multiple sandbags and balance my AR-10 on a bipod.  In the future, I’m going to bring something to prop myself up and some extra support for the rifle.  That new stand on the left is a welcome addition.

You may have noticed the buildup of the primary berm in the background of prior shots.  Here is a better view.

And, speaking of berms, if you look just to the right of the range area, you can see the first dump of dirt for the new 1000-yard berm.

Now I’ll have to buy a new rifle and scope to enjoy it.  Such a bad problem to have 🙂

Also in the area of new and improved is the work on the pistol-only practice area.

This is inside the circular clump of trees that you can see by looking to the right of the prior shot.  Here is a closer view.

Expected completion date is mid-May, depending on weather.  Recent rain, for example, has made it nearly impossible to mow, so predicting the completion of any area is difficult.  It will be really nice to have separate pistol and rifle practice areas.

I have no expected completion date for the 1000-yard range.  Range times are still by appointment only, but I expect Fusion is moving closer to having the range open continuously, depending on weather.
